Architecture is the language through which spaces speak, shaping lives, cultures, and aspirations. At the heart of this transformative discipline stands Kush Shah, a visionary architect and interior designer whose journey is a testament to purpose and innovation. In 1989, Kush Shah founded Scarlett Designs, an award-winning multidisciplinary design firm that has evolved into Scarlett Designs Pvt. Ltd. (SDPL).
Under his leadership, Scarlett Designs has successfully executed diverse projects globally, driven by strong design fundamentals and work ethics. Kush’s philosophy revolves around resolving clients’ problems through elegant, ecofriendly designs, fostering trust and long-term relationships. With a love for design challenges and a commitment to innovation, he continues to craft spaces that inspire and endure.
Scarlett Designs: Crafting Transformative Space
Scarlett Designs is a cross-functional firm specialising in high-end design for largescale hospitality, commercial, and residential projects and public infrastructure like lakefront developments and safari parks.
The firm has multiple ongoing projects across the private and government sectors, including bungalows, residential and commercial towers, resorts for Taj and Atmos, and eco-resorts in the Northeast, amongst others.
The projects delivered by Scarlett Designs impact the urban landscape and occupants in various ways, redefining the standards of luxury in the country, creating accessible spaces to spotlight local attractions, becoming centres of knowledge and boosting tourism.
From Humble Beginnings
Kush got his first few projects through family contacts and his social network, leveraging his technical knowledge and skills gained during his student years. Initially, Kush worked solo from his bedroom. He utilised his office training and internship experience to build a network of vendors.
As his work spoke for itself, he received consistent projects and positive feedback, leading to referrals and an expanding reputation. He actively pitched for projects, and his dedication paid off, laying the foundation for Scarlett Designs’ growth and success.
A Distinctive Approach: Resolving Problems through Designs
Scarlett Designs’ designs aim to solve problems at various scales, systematising and streamlining tourism, increasing accessibility and incorporating environmentally friendly measures like water and electricity conservation.
Each project is unique in its design language and process. The team at Scarlett Designs do not take a formulaic approach to design; they create a space that acknowledges and adapts to site conditions, climatic conditions, and the needs of the client. They are known for commitment, attention to detail and versatile spaces with sound building systems and materials.
The Key Inspiration
Kush Shah’s path to becoming an architect was unplanned. A visit to his cousin at the CEPT campus sparked his interest in architecture, aligning with his passion for sketching and painting. The beautiful campus and the thought of creating spaces within those surroundings excited him. Kush never planned to be an architect, but it turned out to be a logical choice for him.
What Makes Kush Shah Stand Out?
As an entrepreneur, Kush’s ability to communicate effectively with potential clients sets him apart. He prioritises honesty, transparency, and trust, fostering a long-term relationship. His approach has been key to his success, making Scarlett Designs a trusted name in the industry.
Source of Inspiration: Iconic Architects
Kush’s professional inspirations include two iconic architects. Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, his mentor, left a lasting impression with his guidance and insights during Kush’s early academic years. Doshi’s approach continues to influence his design philosophy.
The other is Frank Lloyd Wright, a pioneer of modern architecture. Kush admires Wright’s bold approach, unique designs and commitment to distinctiveness. Wright’s organic, environmentally sensitive architecture inspires Kush to this day
Navigating Uncharted Waters
As an entrepreneur, Kush faced multiple challenges while establishing her architecture practice. One of the biggest hurdles was the lack of infrastructure and systems for architects to set up a practice and reach out to stakeholders. While Kush was armed with the technical know-how, he had to learn the ropes of running a business, often relying on trial and error and learning from his team members, including the masons and carpenters.
Through his journey, Kush learnt the importance of adaptability, resilience and continuous learning. His former mentors played a major role in guiding him.
Designs that Resonate
Kush Shah highlights a few projects close to his heart. Ananta Resort and Spa, Ajabgarh, features elemental villas (Earth, Lagoon, Bamboo, and Fire) nestled in the Aravalli ranges. Kalhaar Blues and Greens (KBG) Golf Country Club boasts a 500,000 sq ft space with amenities designed in a distinct style, unified by a central spine celebrating arches. Both projects showcase his passion for creating immersive experiences.
He is also excited about upcoming resorts such as Meraki Hills Resort and Spa and Amaaya by Ama, Taj.
Remembering Sustainability’s Actual Meaning
According to Kush, sustainability is often misused, but architects must grasp its depth. At Scarlett Designs, Kush and his team have practised climate-sensitive architecture since the 1980s, integrating active and passive energy measures. Their approach includes using low-emissivity glass, a water recharge system and locally sourced materials.
The leading man draws inspiration from traditional architecture, incorporating eco-friendly solutions into modern designs. It is about implementing sustainable practices, not just using the term.
Beyond Blueprints: The Human Element
Kush Shah emphasises that technical skills are just one part of the equation in architecture. Understanding client psychology and requirements is equally crucial, as you are crafting spaces that impact lives for decades. His firm’s philosophy revolves around its efforts to respond to client needs, solve their problems, and, in the process, create designs that are elegant yet environmentfriendly.
Through detailed research and open communication, they build trust and foster long-term relationships. It is about balancing technical expertise with empathy and understanding.
The Art of Adaptation
He has learnt that architecture is about finding creative solutions to complex problems, requiring adaptability, resilience and patience. As a collaborative field, it demands effective communication to understand diverse stakeholders’ needs and concerns. Working with clients, consultants, contractors, and others, he has enhanced his skills to navigate varied perspectives.
Crafting Bespoke Spaces
The design philosophy at Scarlett Designs is rooted in responding to client needs and resolving their problems through elegant, eco-friendly design. Each project is tailored to the client through meticulous research, ensuring innovative solutions. Whether it is redefining luxury in golf clubs and resorts, boosting productivity in commercial spaces, or creating versatile residential areas, their approach is always unique.
They prioritise bespoke designs, adapting to site conditions, climate, client needs and occupant requirements. This commitment to detail positions Scarlett Designs as a leader in the industry. Looking ahead, Scarlett Designs is poised for growth with plans to scale up operations and expand its presence in the new niches and locations.
Pearls of Wisdom
Kush advises budding architects and designers to be prepared for a reality check after college. The transition can be jarring, with rejections and challenges ahead. His message is to persevere, innovate, and push boundaries. Challenge convention and keep evolving. With persistence and hard work, success will follow, but this is a journey that requires resilience and passion.
Scarlett Designs’s tagline reflects our commitment to crafting transformative spaces:
“Designing for the challenge, the craft, and the communities we shape.”
